Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP support

Astraada GSM modems are used to exchange data in a GPRS / UMTS network between distributed devices, main control systems and SCADA systems. The modem can be connected to any device with a serial or Ethernet interface, and supports Modbus RTU protocol and Modbus TCP. The compact, aluminum construction, makes operation possible in temperatures below zero, and the wide range of power supply allows the modem to be installed in confined spaces and for it to work in an industrial environment.

These modems are based on known and proven Telit components, which guarantees reliable and trouble-free operation.

Data transmission

GPRS - along with radio modems, are one of the most popular standards for wireless data exchange in applications which require remote control and monitoring in industry systems. Based on the network infrastructure belonging to the suppliers of mobile technology, it is ideal for transmission over very long distances while reducing the costs of investment and maintenance.

Communication for very long distances - due to its characteristics and extensive infrastructure, long-distance communication in GSM / GPRS is possible and it is available in almost any location. It is insensitive to the terrain topography, other obstacles, and does not require external antenna masts - this means that implementation of such systems is quick, easy and inexpensive.

Costs under control - In GPRS communication systems the cost to the user is settled on the amount of transmitted and received data packets. In order to reduce costs Astraada GSM modems are equipped with mechanisms to optimize communication so it is possible to precisely estimate the cost of transmission.


GPRS communication is using infrastructure belonging to the mobile network operators. This allows the exchange of data between very long distances while minimizing investment costs. This kind of system consists of the following components:

  • control devices - PLC, PAC controllers, frequency inverters, HMI Panels
  • GPRS modems - providing communication between the control devices and the server APN
  • overarching systems - SCADA systems, monitoring systems

Cyclic polling communication - This communication model is used for cyclic polling devices at a defined time. This reduces the cost of data transfer in distributed systems that do not require continuous access to information from the object. This type of communication does not require any additional equipment on the side of the master system - the system only needs access to the network which allows cyclic communication among the distributed devices.

Event communication – This communication type protects users in case of an event or accident which happens in a field from the lack of immediate information to the master system. In this case, the modem immediately sends event information to the master system.

Examples of use

Monitoring and remote control of water supply and sewage systems

Installing a SCADA system in a dispatching station, and GSM modems connected with remote PLC, allows for remote monitoring and control of distributed control systems. Visualization of measurement data, transmission of control signals and archiving of data collected in an industrial object database allows for comprehensive support for applications within the water and sewerage industry. Due to the versatility and range of communication, the system can be dispersed over a wide area and can be managed from a central control room.

Notification systems

Modems can be used in systems to ensure the protection of the environment, where it is connected to the devices responsible for monitoring the levels of pollution in rivers and transmits this data to the central control room. Based on this information, relevant departments are able to react in a short time, e. g. in case of flood risk or environmental contamination.

Monitoring the transmission pipelines

Modems can work in applications which are responsible for constantly monitoring and logging the parameters of the transmitted medium. In such applications modems are installed in defined transmission point measurements on pipelines and send the information about on the basic parameters of the transported medium in specific time. Collected data can quickly detect a failure, minimizing losses.

Road Infrastructures

Modems in such systems are used to transmit information to variable message signs. Dynamic message signs allow you to display information to road users depending on current needs. This system allows the transmission of important information, which changes over time. This significantly enhances safety and improves traffic flow.
